BOOK EXCERPTS
Andre The Giant: A Legendary Life

Shane quotes from the book:
"The Andre van was a cool thing. Andre didn't fit anywhere. We tried to find big cars, but it was hard for him to be comfortable. Finally my dad got him the Andre van, which was a custom coach with a pop top for extra headroom, a big captain's swivel chair to make it easy for him to sit comfortably. He'd get in, and the van would tip."

"Andre didn't like anybody else that was remotely big. He wanted to be the only giant, because that was his thing."

"At one point I remember him drinking this Mexican whiskey that had fermented snakes in it. Not worms, snakes. I remember looking at it and being so freaked out. He offered to give me a drink of that Mexican whiskey, but I was like, 'No Way!' He knew I was scared to death when he offered it to me. But there were a few times where we had a couple of beers together. I didn't drink very much, so after a few beers, I was like 'Whoa.' He got a big laugh out of that - 'Ho, ho, ho, ho!' - because he knew I was wasted. He got a kick out of that. It was kind of a rite of passage. Andre got to drink with my grandfather, then my father, and then me, the kid. It was a very cool thing for both of us, I think."

"I was just starting to work out then, so I saw Andre almost every day. It was so funny to see him on those machines, because everything was so tiny. I had to teach him form, tell him things like 'Keep your back straight.' He had never lifted a weight in his career. My dad and I always said, 'Can you imagine if Andre actually trained? He'd have a thirty-inch arm!'"

"Andre was always so nice to me. My dad told me it's because he was shocked that I wasn't scared of him. Usually everyone was very afraid, just based on the sheer size of the man - he was very intimidating. But kids have no fear. So I got to know Andre, he was my buddy. I'd sit in the locker room when he was playing cards, things like that. I always told my dad that I was going to grow up and be Andre The Giant's tag team partner. I was going to grow up and be big like Andre, not small, like my dad."

"When Andre showed up on Ted Turner's broadcast, it was just a shock. At that time we were pretty much at war, and my dad specifically was extremely hurt. I don't know why Andre did it. Maybe he was unhappy being out of the limelight and it was just a nice little thing to be back among the boys. I definitely think he was coaxed into it. I remember my dad called Andre and said, 'Boss, I've just gotta say that you really hurt my feelings. After everything, to see you with a competitor really hurt.' I think Andre apologized. I don't think he fully realized what he'd done. At that point his health was definitely deteriorating. I think he was upset at the fact that he couldn't do what he used to do. He was on crutches, and that was another thing that upset my dad - why would he ever show that to anybody?"

Batista Unleashed

"I guess if I'm really going to give myself up, I ought to confess about the time Shane McMahon and Jonathan Sully were in Thailand doing a promotional tour. Shane, of course, has been on both sides of the ring, and has a pretty important executive position with the company as executive vice president of Global Media. Jonathan works in our British office.

We'd had a long day of seeing people and had had a long day. We decided to go out after dinner and have a few drinks. We went to what looked like a respectable bar in a hotel. It was packed when we went in. Shane and I concentrated on our drinks. For some reason we started drinking kamikazes. We polished off twenty-two each in an hour, which for me was a record.

Shane's a competitive guy."

Chyna: If They Only Knew

"I can count the number of people who I trust on one hand. And Shane gets two fingers. He plays a heel, a coward, a dickweed in the ongoing WWF soap opera, puts himself up there for everyone to ridicule when, in reality, this guy would crawl over an acre of broken beer bottles for a friend."

"Part of Shane's charm comes from his perpetual anxiousness; hang around him and you get the feeling that you're on a thrill ride clicking up to the top. Little things excite and delight him; with Shane, you're on a perpetual road trip. And he loves fashion."

Section 1: Me
"I am very proud to carry the name McMahon and be the fourth generation in the promotions business. My great-grandfather Jess McMahon promoted boxing and wrestling for Tex Rickart at Madison Square Garden back in the early 1900's. His son, my grandfater, Vince J. McMahon followed in this tradition and founded and grew what was then known as the "northeast territory", stemming from Washington D.C. to Maine. Madison Square Garden was and is considered to be home to our family's business. This "territory" was then known as The World Wrestling Federation. During this time my grandfather discovered the talents of Andre the Giant, Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Freddie Blassie, Gorilla Monsoon and even a young unknown, who would later become Hulk Hogan.

My father, Vincent K. McMahon was first introduced to his dad's business as a teenager and fell in love with it immediately. After working many years with his father, my dad took over and turned the wrestling business on its ear and changed its landscape forever. In 1985, Madison Square Garden, became home to the biggest event of them all; the first ever WrestleMania.

Unlike my dad, my introduction to the business happened at a much earlier age, but its impact on me was the same. I was just a little boy when I fell in love with the larger than life characters, the athleticism and the storylines. I remember standing backstage watching my dad and being so proud to be his son. I wanted to grow up and be just like him. As a man, I realize how lucky I am to be able to follow in the footsteps of three generations of extraordinary McMahon men. I hope that in my lifetime, I can make the kind of contributions they made to this business, and that they will be as proud of me, as I have been to carry on their name.

Section 3: Life

My first match was against none other than the hardcore legend Mick Foley. I was so nervous, but the nervousness ended quickly as I was introduced to an immense amount of pain as well as Mr. Socko.

My biggest challenge: It is a very humbling experience when you are a full grown man and against your will, you are thrown around like a child and there is nothing you can do about it. Big Show is truly super-human. The key to competing with Big Show is don't, but if you are forced to, you had best get creative.

My most memorable match was competing in the ring at Wrestlemania X-Seven. Imagine if you had the opportunity to compete in the biggest show in the industry, in front of 67, 925 live in attendance and millions watching around the world and you are facing Vince McMahon. The icon of our industry, the creator of the very show we were competing in, my creator, my best man, my friend, my boss, my dad. I have never been more proud to be in a match than I was for this one. Dad, thank you fro always giving me opportunities in life. I am so proud to be your son, I am so proud of you and I love you more than words can express.

My greatest accomplishment in the ring happened on June 24, 2001 at King of the Ring. That was the day that I had the priviledge of facing one of the greatest athletes in the world, Kurt Angle. The bond that Kurt and I created during that match is something that you can't describe it is just one of those unbelievable things in life that very few people get to experience. That match was 30 minutes of non stop adrenalin where we pushed each other to the absolute limit. I was so happy when he beat me because my body felt that I had been in several successive high speed car accidents. The pain subsided for us both for about a minute as everyone in the Meadowlands showed us their appreciation and bestowed upon us the highest honor that can be given, a standing ovation. For all that were there that night I would like to say thank you for giving us that magical moment and Kurt, you are the man!

Section 4: Home

My wife Marissa and I love living in Manhattan. For us, the city has an energy and a vibe unlike anywhere in the world. We take advantage of everything the city has to offer from the theatre to museums and art galleries, to new restaurants and events at Madison Square Garden. We love that you can walk everywhere in New York and there is always something new to discover. The best of everything is in the city, and you don't need a car to get there. On the weekends we wake up and take our dog Medfield to the dog park or sit outside a cafe with a cup of coffee and the paper and just let the day take us where it does. Marissa and I are proud to be New Yorkers and to live in, what we believe is the greatest city in the world. We couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Every night when I drive home from work I cross the bridge that leads into Manhattan and my heart begins to race with excitement. I can see the Statue of Liberty in the distance and I say hello. She is a reminder of how much I love New York and how close I am to getting home to see my wife.
